As you might notice from the list in the right column, I have trimmed down the podcasts I am currently subscribed to. There are actually 3 others I have subscriptions for, but they are not what you would call regular. One of them - Top of the Pods posted an episode last month after a 3 year absence. And it doesn't seem like there will be another one anytime soon, but I keep subscribed just in case.
Another is The Audacity to Podcast. This one is regularly updated, but I don't listen to each episode; only the ones that cover something I want to hear about.
Finally, the 3rd is Podcast411. It recently started again after it, too, had a 3 year hiatus.
The podcasts that publish new episodes regularly are:
Podcast Answer Man (weekly)
School of Podcasting (weekly)
The Dice Tower (weekly)
The rest put out new episodes when they have content; sometimes a month, sometimes longer.
So, on a weekly basis it is real easy for me to run our of podcasts to listen to. Because of that I am always searching for new podcasts or episodes of existing podcasts that interest me. And that's not an easy task.
Maybe I'm too picky, but here are some of the criteria I use to focus my searching:
1. I don't do comedy podcasts. I find that most comedy podcasts are either stupid or just not funny.
2. I don't subscribe to podcasts about movies or tv because they cover too many movies I haven't seen or tv shows I don't watch. The last podcasts I subscribed to about tv were The Fringe Podcast and Fringecasting with Wayne and Dan. That's because they focused solely on the tv show Fringe.
I have tried to listen to podcasts about the tv shows I am currently following, but they just don't grab me. Many times that is the personality of the host(s). I alos find my self wondering if they were watching the same show I was because they miss so much or get things wrong.
3. I'm not interested in listening to a serialized book podcast or serialized drama. If I want to hear that sort of material I will listen to some of the Old Time Radio collection.
4. Tech podcasts. I haven't really found any that interest me. I don't care what Apple or Microsoft is working on. I don't care about new phones or apps unless I am looking for something specific. I manage to keep abreast of tech news via the blogs I read.
I find I am more interested in things related to science fiction but have yet to find podcasts in that area that manage to keep my interest enough to subscribe to them. And the ones I have heard would end up going to the bottom of the listen list for when I ran out of my regular podcasts.
I wouldn't mind a good "slice-of-life" podcast but if your description says something like "a couple of friends having a beer and talking about stuff".....forget it.
I know it seems like I am a little hard to please, but I am always looking for something new; something that will spark my interest.
I have found that a good source for hearing about podcasts is Facebook, Twitter and some of the Google+ communities.
I guess I might just have to sit down and start podcasting again myself.
